Root is an asymmetric strategy board game set in a charming yet conflict-filled forest 🌲. Every faction plays by completely different rules and win conditions, turning each match into a unique tactical showdown full of surprises.
Command wildly different factions: the industrial Marquise de Cat, the disciplined Eyrie Dynasties, the rebellious Woodland Alliance, or the opportunistic Vagabond 😼. Each one offers a distinct playstyle, creating unpredictable strategies and clever interactions every game.
Beyond mechanics, Root creates emergent storytelling—rebellions rise, empires collapse, and lone wanderers profit from chaos. Every session feels like a miniature woodland war story straight out of a dark fairy tale.
Deep Strategy, Light Vibes
Cute, colorful art hides deeply crunchy decision-making. It’s easy to learn the basics, but mastering each faction takes real skill. With AI opponents, online play, and expansions, every game feels fresh and replayable 🎲.
Step 1: Root is played over a series of turns where each faction follows its own system. You win by reaching 30 victory points or completing a dominance card.
Step 2: Choose Your Faction
Step 3: Pick a faction with a unique role: Marquise builds infrastructure, Eyrie expands aggressively, Woodland Alliance rebels from the shadows, and Vagabond acts independently. Beginners usually start with Marquise or Eyrie.
Step 4: Learn Your Player Board
Step 5: Each faction has a structured turn order (Birdsong, Daylight, Evening). Follow these steps carefully every round—your board acts as your personal rulebook.
Step 6: Place Starting Pieces
Step 7: Set up your warriors, buildings, and tokens according to your faction’s setup guide. Proper placement defines your early-game strength and strategy.
Step 8: Take Actions in Order
Step 9: On your turn, move, battle, craft, or build depending on your faction rules. Most actions depend on card suits (fox, mouse, rabbit) and resource management.
Step 10: Score Victory Points
Step 11: Earn points by building structures, spreading influence, completing objectives, crafting items, or playing dominance cards. Keep track on the shared victory track 📈.
Step 12: Play Online or vs AI
Step 13: In digital versions, tap actions to see valid moves, use tutorials and tooltips, and experiment freely. Then jump into online matches or ranked play to test your strategy 💥.
